Axe throwing has become one of the most popular social activities in the country, and it’s now available right here in Rensselaer at Rivertown Family Fun Center. Axe throwing is exactly what it sounds like: you throw a hatchet-style axe at a wooden target and try to hit the bullseye. It sounds intense, but it’s surprisingly approachable. With a staff member walking you through it, most people land their first solid throw within a few minutes.
It’s become popular as a date night activity, a team-building event for employers, and a fun thing to do with a group of friends who want something more memorable than dinner and a movie.
Axe Throwing at Rivertown
Rivertown has dedicated axe throwing lanes for walk-in guests and group bookings. All sessions are supervised — you’ll get a safety briefing and instruction before you throw a single axe. No experience is required or expected.
Who can throw:
- Teens and adults — axe throwing is not available for young children
- Walk-ins are welcome during regular hours
- Groups can book private lane time by calling ahead
Date Night Axe Throwing — Every Friday
Every Friday from 8:00–11:00 PM, Rivertown runs an adults-only date night axe throwing session. It’s a great answer to “what should we do this Friday?” in Rensselaer — something different, competitive, and genuinely fun.
You don’t need to book in advance for date night, though calling ahead to confirm availability is always a good idea.
Group and Team Events
Rivertown is one of the few venues in Northwest Indiana that can run an axe throwing competition as part of a company event, team outing, or group activity. Brackets, head-to-head matchups, and casual sessions are all possible.

- Thursday: 5:00–8:00 PM
- Friday: 5:00–11:00 PM (date night 8–11 PM, adults only)
- Saturday: 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
- Sunday: 2:00–6:00 PM

Is It Safe?
Yes. Axe throwing venues have an excellent safety record when they’re run properly, and Rivertown takes the safety protocols seriously. Every participant gets a full safety briefing. The lanes are designed to prevent stray throws, and staff are present at all times.
